History

Victoria School Concert Band had a very humble beginning as the Victoria School Drum And Fife Band in 1965. Though originally formed as a combined band with Beatty Secondary School, it later made a bold decision to become independent in 1973. Thus, it was renamed the Victoria School Military Band.(VSMB)

The VSMB established itself as one of the premier bands on the local scene. Over the next seven years, Souza's Marches were to ring far and wide everywhere the band performed, so much so that many people would know that the VSMB was performing when they heard its signature tune, "El Capitan".

In 1977 saw the arrival of Mr. Mohd Nasir bin Ibrahim as its new instructor, and there was an immediate and dramatic change in the variety and quality of music which the band produced.

1982 proved a trying time for the band when the school ceased its intake for pre-university students with the setting up of Victoria Junior College. The experince and leadership of the students thus went with them. Very fortunately, Mr. Tan Beng Wee, an outstanfing alumni band member then agreed to join the band as its part time instructor.

August 6th, 1983 was another milestone for the abdn. On that day, it was formally renamed Victoria School Concert Band. (VSCB), thus relinquishing its marching band heritage.

In 1991, after 15 years of teaching, Mr. Nasir bid farewell to the band to take on further responsibilities as Senior Band Supervisor in ECAC. Thus, the baton was passed on to Mr. Tan Beng Wee. In 1993, Ms. Chan Peck Suan kindly consented to help Mr. Tan in the instrumental tasks.

In short, VSCB has had 36 illustrious years, bagging many awards and enjoying wide popularity.  These achievements could not have been possible without the strong sense of selfless dedication and commitment of its many generations of conductors, teachers and young musicians.
